at the weekend we played some wonderful master tape copies, e.g. The Eagles – Hell Freezes Over, Michael Hedges – Arial Boundaries, and others.
Despite we know that the handling of the tapes needs careful treatment we were able to hear the difference between excellent Vinyl and good Tape recordings, the latter clearly the best audio quality!
Yes, it takes some time in preparing and listening. Also storing of the tapes is a crucial activity after having winded up the tape to the back side. This is a safety-procedure allowing no transfer of the magnetic layer while storing (tape is tail out).

We also transferred DMM – Dublate No 2 from Mr. Pauler (Stockfish) to tape, maybe the best vinyl format on the market. Interestingly he uses the same phono-pre than me, the EMT JPA 66. But other than me he does not run the most sophisticated volume control button (and expensive electronic technology behind it) 😉. – “Volume Control” and “Re-Design“ on this blog.
