Free Jazz

when I discovered this record from Ornette Coleman I thought about getting it because it is a MOVI reprint with printing number 000006. The quality might be excellent and it is! Nevertheless this LP marks the beginning of the free jazz area. With the unique instrumentation and personnel of the Double Quartett – two reeds, two trumpets, two basses, two drummers are playing.

I prefer side B with the basses of Scott La Faro and Charlie Haden and later on the drummers Billy Higgins and Ed Blackwell. Side A with the horns of Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman, Donald Cherry and Freddie Hubbard playing really free it is not my favorite.

the critics are interesting. One is: “ I am sure I’ll still find plenty of exciting records, but after playing Free Jazz I felt like I’d just heard the most insane album ever and nothing could complete with it”
