Presence Improvement

You may know that we got the ability listening to higher tones using High and Super High Tweeters in our audio system. Usually we are told getting older we are loosing some frequencies. Being an experienced listener you may still hear the tones in the upper harmonics.

I am using the TAD 703 Super High Tweeter, going to 32 kHZ. So far so good, the sound is fine. I never complained…we know the ear is included up to 45 kHZ, in ear frequencies up to 18-20.000, standard are 12 kHZ.

I don ´t know if you ever tried to improve the presence of your audio system by using a Super High Tweeter reaching up to 150 kHZ? If not I suggest you may test it. Medical doctors told us that the surface of the face, the skin, including the front- and paranasal sinuses, and the retina (pls. never use glasses when you listen to your system), are receiving parts of the sound you get. Also the midriff is a receiving part!

 
My 40 years old EAS Technics 10TH1000 leaf ribbon make it up to 150 kHZ, improving the presence by providing all the upper harmonics. Parts of the sound which used to be a bit harsh become rounder and  softer, also with SACDs and CDs.
It is unbelievable but you need to hear 👂 it!

  1. Have you got any experience with Corona Plasma tweeter, produced by Lansche audio? It is claimed to reach 150kHz as well.

    I have some experience with Corona tweeters, with a little less efficiency factor but some ozon on top of it – free of cost 😂
    There will be a new book on phono related innovations and insight experience in English- maybe at X-mas time…

    thanks for this interesting post – the fact that you hear different when wearing glasses compared to not wearing glasses I also encountered. Even though it sounds better without glasses I wear them most of the time, since without I barely see wha’ts in front of me :-). I should try wearing lenses, maybe that makes a difference, too (note to myself: try it with the next listening session).

    Regarding super tweeters I have (so far) no experiences, but when looking at our Hifi and music friends in Japan one can see quite often that they are using super tweeters with their systems.

    Besides that I am wondering how you manage all your sources with one pre-amp – are there enough inputs? I had to look for a solution, since the last input I could use was the “AV-in” (with fixed volume though) and found a product from Dodocus (passive preamp with volume control and separate power supply) that now allows me to plug-in four sources more. So now I am also able to use the Teac R2R deck from my father 🙂

    The Japanese are far ahead of us in these terms.

    I am using two preamp-lines, the ARC 40 and the EMT 66 JPA, which is a phono pre but also a preamp. I can switch between the two lines on top of my WAVAC amps, a special silver switch allows it. Having sold one of my R2R, the C37, I am pretty fine with all inputs. Still own the A820. I also use a silver switch board without signal loss, similar to your Dodocus, before my phono lines of the Micro Seiki 8000 and the EMT R80 going into the MM-input of the EMT 66 JPA.

    You may not seeing your system clearly without your glasses, just take a good glass of whiskey. This will compensate …

    thanks for your reply. Regarding super tweeters and your experience – would you recommend a super tweeter which is able to regulate the dB output or will adding a super tweeter without that feature be sufficient? I’d like to experiment with this, but on the market there are not many options at a price point I am willing to pay (to test it). Currently I am looking at the Aperion Audio Super Tweeter (which can regulate dB Output and crossover frequency) and the Taket Super Tweeters from Japan (Taket Bee Pure, Taket Batpro II (which can regulate dB Output). If you have any hints this would be great….

    Regarding the glasses – will try it next time with one of my Whiskys 🙂

    Depends on your system. You may use an unregulated High Super Tweeter.
    I tried the Taket Batpro 2. not as good as my Technics.
    Aperion Audio goes to 33kHZ. Just drop it from your list.

    I am enjoying a fine glass of whiskey, listening to Eric Reed and reading your updates. I am also wondering how one can ‘hear’ a super tweeter than has a frequency response of up to 150khz? There isn’t any program material at those frequencies. Is there?

    Even a high resolution download is restricted to about 35khz? I am 57, and I am certain that my high frequency hearing is not what it used to be, as with most of us as we age. So how can one really benefit from using Super tweeters? I’ll have to do some research.

    Excellent posts as always. So sad to hear the you sold the C37. That is one I think you’re really going to miss.

    Bulgarian medical doctors discovered as the first expert team that we receive frequencies far ahead what we thought all the time. Our Japanese audio friends and their developers went the right way long time ago when establishing those Super-Tweeters.
    There are differences between the various models of course!
    Try to examine it!

    At Xmas time we will see a fantastic book covering many new ideas and insight perspectives of listening, especially in phono – in English. I will tell you when I have it in my hands.

    you may get some tarifs on Scottish whiskey thanks to your president. Nevertheless enjoy 🥃.
