Collection

I am selling a lot to become clean but the room still looks crowded. Any hints how to solve the issue?

Meanwhile I am enjoying my master tape copies on Jazz (great recordings – see below) and Rock music – some where copied by my friend in Vienna New City.

  1. Eckart,

My friend, I have come to realize that owning and enjoying fine audio is a vicious cycle. I have been selling off my collection of some 45 years since 2013. The challenge is to have ONE turntable, ONE cartridge, ONE tape machine, ONE amplifier, ONE preamp, ONE set of speakers. That’s not easy, but it can be done.

For example, I haven’t had a half track reel to reel in my system for three years now. The problem is, I still have all of my tapes, so I miss it. If only I could bring myself to sell off my tapes, I would be good.
After seeing your reel to reel collection reduced to one reel to reel tape machine, (the ASC) I thought, Eckart’s doing really good. He is simplifying his system. But then came the Technics, and now the Nagra and so it continues. But isn’t that what all the fun and enjoyment are about?

I am currently having my Sansui AU777 and AU111 Integrated amplifiers (solid state and tube) restored to proper operating condition. Both are new old stock, so they are pristine. The idea being that one of those will be my last. (LOL! …. it’s just an idea). =)

Thank you for sharing your audio journey with us! I also appreciate the many times you have helped me with my system, especially when I owned the EMT.

The system looks great, I wouldn’t change a thing.

    • Dear Norman,
In fact I was missing my reel to reels. I had two excellent Studer machines, loved them but had the opportunity to sell them to Taiwan which was not a bad deal anyhow.
Most people told me to sell the tapes rather than the records.
By the time when I met my Austrian friend we developed a funny relation, I sold and maybe improved his phono systems (no, not only one table but many, Mono and EMTs). And he had some impact on my reel to reel listening. Honestly – as we all know – listening to good master tape copies is the best you can do.
When I had a nice couple over here buying my Oasis table we were also looking into a master tape copy of Miles Davis – A kind of blue. We all agreed that the music in front of us is like being in a Jazz club, you may hear all nuances of the instruments with a wonderful silent background.

While I am using the Technics for the NAB copies like the US Tape Project the Nagra T 1 runs my CCIR copies. So it makes sense. Nevertheless the investment was never planned. The guy who sold me the machine wasn’t far away. And he was able to offer me excellent quality for a good price.

So it is a personal audio history as you experience with your amps. I do support you inviting your wife for the perfect dinner. Tell me what will be the result and for which kind of machine you are going for.

      All the best
      E.
