DS ES 001

the DS unit for measuring Out- or In-centered position of the record’s hole arrived at me.

you need to put in two batteries which you may load with the attached charger.

I tried a record which I took with me from my California trip:

you need to look at the In – Center position by keeping the unit fixed on the rotating platter during measuring keeping one finger on the touch screen when the command field lights up.

in this case everything was all right, I had not to move the record.

This is how a correct centered hole of a record should be:

when I used another record I got a “red result” in the beginning, it is a German EMC pressing.

after moving the record I received a yellow and then a green result. Besides of the round fixation field you see a BEF (Before) and AFT (After) diagramm on the lower left side and a wave for giving indication of the deviation.

the music is perfect, no oscillation of the pitch. The adjustment is very helpful. It usually takes 2 minutes. In case you need to enlarge the hole by the delivered cutting instrument it maybe a bit longer. Expansioning the hole is relatively simple and precise. Just put the reamer in the hole and turn it cautiously.
The ES 001 is quite heavy, you may use it as a weight after having finished measuring and moving.

with this “new record” (Reissue 2024) of TomPetty – more songs on two Lps – it was necessary to expand the hole by using the reamer. I did it very cautiously in two steps reaching the In-Centralised point after moving.

The DS ES 001 is one of the improving little tools for record playing on a high niveau, actually a must to have if the price wouldn’t be such high. I am sure I will not miss my Nakamichi TX-1000 anymore 😉. It makes a difference, you do hear it. And it is not only measuring!

I do understand some opinions which say for measuring a record it is a good tool but I would never expand a record’s hole of my old original pressings. From my experience right now I would say that 3/4 of my records only need some kind of moving back to the central point. Most holes are too big for the spindle (especially at modern pressings) and do need only a movement into the centralised position. 1/4 should be enlarged in a very subtle way. Which means usually you do not need to enlarge the hole! For all other cases It will be a fine adjustment of the record’s hole when you are using the reamer. In the end you will use the DS ES 001 all the time. If you compare the sound before and after centralisation you will be totally convinced of the DS unit. The battery consumption is a little high, so you need to exchange the batteries after time. On the unit there is a connection for future software updates.

We should not forget that we are going for a ca. 7,2 mm diameter of the spindle. Some manufacturers use more or less playground. It is better to have some space than to squeeze the record onto a tight fitting spindle.

Don’t take me wrong. It is not my aim to market the company (despite I am convinced right now) and I am always looking for new technologies to see facing the challenges in the future. It is one of the real issues you are confronted with when you are in serious analog playing. Mr. Nakamichi did start a congenial attempt some 40 years ago with the help of Micro Seiki. Aki san of DS Audio is continuing…what will be next?

with all my turntables the DS centraliser works pretty well, my needles do not sway around anymore! Wow and flutter of the whole system can be reduced by correcting the eccentricity of the record.

here you see the initial starting of the measurement – red points

music on vinyl does good mastering and centralization

  1. While I welcome and like the device and the possibility to measure and ultimately nullify the eccentricity of a sub-standard centered / badly pressed vinyl LP, I have my reservations re the enlarging of the center hole to “cure” the problem. This is definitely a “no way” for any serious record collector as it damages the record in collector’s view.

There will be an option appearing on the stage soon which allows for compensation of eccentricity without modifying anything physical at the vinyl itself.

  2. E,

This is genius. Do you find this a better approach than the Nakamichi Dragon-CT you once owned? I remember hearing a demo of that table and it was very impressive.

    I love this idea.
