when I was vagabonding through record shops in Munich after High End 2025 with my friend from San Francisco I was pushed into the direction of Mal Waldron. Sorry to say but I never heard from him before. This changed when I bought the newly published vinyl of “Rat Now Paris 70” recorded in the Parisian hotel Palais d’Orsay in 1970.
it is done in perfect audiophile quality, unbelievable! And broadcasted on radio Jazz Vivant by Andre Francis. I also bought “Free at Last” and “First Encounter” on vinyl.
I learned he was living in Munich from 1969 into the 90ies going to some European events and to Japan. Later he lived in Belgium. He recorded for ECM (their first recording !) „ Free at last“ in Tokyo, also “First Encounter” with Gary Peacock and the drummer Hiroshima Murakami. Both records are excellent! I had to store them on tape.
Let me say these are wonderful Jazz records, not free (!) but very musical. Mat is playing piano in a fantastic way.
in case you like to discover this great musician you will be very happy to do so. Don‘t forget this year he would have become 100 years old. We are working on that too 👍
I knew of Mal Waldron for a couple decades however I completely overlooked his genius. The story is that he was a bebop player and he had serious healthy issue and completely changed his style of play in the late 60s early 70s. Long the blog.
